More than anywhere else, this is a place where pictures cannot convey the grandeur of the scenery.

This picture is at the eastern end of the gorges, where the river Artuby joins the Verdon.

The bridge and the nearby bar are fantastic viewpoints, second only to the Cirque de Vaumale (see Title Page) even though they are not so high above the river.

The second picture shows the western end of the gorge, across a corner of the huge Lac de Ste Croix.
You can just see the northern route, halfway up the cliff on the left, while the southern route is the one crossing the bridge, having already descended from the Col d'Illoire down to water level.

They do say that the best trip of all is to take a boat along the river itself - cyclists should enjoy hiring a pedalo!
