Grand Canyon du Verdon - Col d'Ayen

The northern route (without including the extra loop of the Route des Cretes) is almost a simple up-and-over.
The highest point at Col d'Ayen (pictured here) is in unspectacular surroundings, but if you time it right, for a very few days in the year you can catch the lavendar ... (this was the end of June).

The eastern and western ends of the route offer good views of the canyon, especially the western end, although the best single viewpoint on the northern route is the 'Point Sublime' near the eastern end, where unfortunately you have to leave the road to see the view.
