The steep road eventually reaches the Rifugio Auronzo (2320 metres), which is the highest surfaced road in the Dolomites.
At this point the views to the south and east open up in a most dramatic way.
Behind the hut, the road continues eastwards as an unsurfaced track traversing a steep slope, towards the Rifugio Lavaredo.
