Swiss Alps
Very close to the French border, this is the highest and best-known of several passes with this name, which means 'narrow passage'.
It is a very hard climb from the east, with no great scenic reward except for some fine aerial views of the upper Rhone valley.
From the west it is shorter and more interesting. The views at the summit are very fine.
