With the Passo di Mendola, this combines to offer an alternative to the flat orchards between Merano and Bolzano.

It is a surprisingly big climb from Merano or Lana, without much scenic merit on the northern side. From the summit and on the gentle south side to Fondo there is some excellent scenery to the west and this side of the pass is very worthwhile and quite unusual in places.

The lower photo here looks down towards Merano, and beyond towards Jaufenpass. The valley bottom filled with apple orchards, this is the Alto Adige.

Györgyi adds:
"The south side is very very light with 2-4% steepness; and with few pics backwards to the valley and the Brenta Dolomites.
The north side has only 2-3 views; first only after 5-6 kms to the Dolomites (1st pic), then not much before the valley to Merano."
