Topographically this is part of the St Gotthard Pass, but it can be thought of as a separate, short and very dramatic climb.

This historic area at the top is easily missed as you ride across on a main road viaduct - but worth stopping for a look.

The climb is busy, noisy, and shared with an improbable ratchet railway line, which runs even steeper than the road.

There are several tunnels and galleries, and the total effect is of being inside some giant intestinal system.

A new main road to bypass all this, marked on some maps, doesn't exist.
