In the Italian Dolomites.

It is a very hard climb indeed from the south, noticeably steeper than most other Alpine passes, and with very little scenic reward.

From Cortina to the north it is easier and much more pleasant, climbing through light woodland with small streams cooling the air. This side is also nicely hairpinned, and makes an entertaining descent.
